Halloween Rewind

With the wedding just a month away I've had zero time to keep up here. Instead of feeling guilty about this blog being a ghost town I thought I might do a blog rewind and highlight some fun fall favorites from years past. First up my easy lace pumpkin from last Halloween.

This pretty lace pumpkin is super easy! Simply cut a little hole for the stem and then use black duct tape to attach it securely at the bottom of the pumpkin. Top her off with a shiny black bow and she's ready to go! It doesn't get much easier than that!

Sorry to any long time readers that have already seen this. I figure repeats are better than complete silence.
Happy Fall!

Doorbell Makeover

Our house was built in 1946 and there are a lot of wonderful nods to that era in the design. The doorbell with its long chimes and its own little cubby in the wall is definitely one of those features. Unfortunately, the brown plastic housing and gold metallic material that topped off the pretty chimes was well past its prime.Doorbell Makeover BeforeI had this doorbell makeover project planned before this house was even officially ours so it was extra fun to finally execute the update. The best part of this project is that it cost me zero dollars because I used materials I already had. I found a spray paint fabric combination I loved and got to work. With a few coats of robins egg blue spray paint and some fabric glue to cover the board that fit into the frame, I was done! Our 1946 doorbell now has a touch of today! Doorbell Makeover - After

Will You Be My Valentine & Bridesmaid?

Duncan and I went back and forth about our wedding party. We had the common problem of do we go small (just our siblings) or do we go big (which means 8 on each side)? It hit me like a ton of bricks one night. What am I thinking!? Of course we need all of our besties involved. Once that was decided I wanted to ask each one of my ladies in very special way. Here's what I put together:
Be My Bridesmaid?I started out by creating a graphic filled with fun fonts in the colors of l-o-v-e. Once I cut those out I attached them to some pink card stock and started decorating the back.
Valentine's Day SurpriseEach card was unique and had a cute little gingham pocket for a personalized note.
Bridesmaid ValentinesI couldn't wait to send them so they ended up arriving a littler earlier than your average Valentine. My good friend Andrea still hasn't seen hers yet. She's a teacher in Turkey and is on holiday in London right now. I can't wait for her to have it waiting for her at school when she returns on Valentine's Day.
If you'd like to ask your bridesmaids the same way then I'm happy to share! You can download the graphic I designed by clicking here (they print two per page).

Light Your Valentine's Fire

Matchbox ValentinesThis is a super cute and simple little gift to give your loved ones on Valentine's Day. They've always been a big hit when I've given them over the years and I can't believe I haven't shared a tutorial on them sooner. The trickiest part of the whole project is finding matches in boxes. They're one of those things that you see all over, but when you need to actually find them they can be hard to track down.MatchboxesGo through your craft supplies and pull anything pink and red and start getting creative!Pink and Red Craft SuppliesGlue is an obvious option, but I definitely prefer my Xyron Sticker maker. It saves time and it isn't messy like glue. I start by covering the top and bottom of the matchbox with a paper that's thick enough to hide the text on the box. Make sure to leave the sides uncovered so you can still light the matches on them. I suggest starting with the paper a little too big and then cut off the excess so the edges are nice and lined up.Xyron Sticker MakerNow think fire, burning love and other hot little Valentine's Day sayings and get decorating! I layered hand cut hearts, stickers, washi masking tape and origami paper, but anything goes. You Light My FireRed Hot LoveI Burn For You!I Burn For You!These cute little gifts from the heart make a great stand alone Valentine. You can also give them with a scented candle or even take most of the matches out and put a tiny little gift or a special love note inside. xox Happy crafting!

Inspiration Board DIY

The end of the year is just a day away now and I'm itching to finish up some things that should have been done months ago. I always have a bunch of little things on my todo list that tend to get shoved aside for more pressing matters. Hanging photos, cleaning up the mess of cords under my desk and other stuff that will help me feel less cluttered and more organized without much effort. I have been focusing on clearing these sorts of things off my list this week to start the new year off feeling accomplished and ready for what's next.

Right after I moved into my current house I started a DIY project on some cork boards I had set aside for my office. I was less than impressed with the outcome of this project and never hung them up. Last night I decided to just try something new to cover the DIY don't and turn it into something I'd be excited about. I'll start backwards and share the finished product first. Here's my brand new inspiration board: Book Pages Inspiration BoardNot only am I really excited about how much I love the finished product, but I also have a new blank canvas to fill up. I'm thinking wedding inspiration, ideas for new Vivi Dot designs, keepsakes from the year that has past and new ideas for the year ahead!

This project was super easy! All you need is a cork board (or three if you want to do it just like me), black duct tape, Elmer's spray adhesive, and an old, beat up paperback book (mine was left over from this project). If you want to connect multiple boards together then you'll also need some screws and a power screw driver. Inspiration Board SuppliesTo start, simply spray the adhesive on individual pages and cover the cork on the board. I alternated horizontal and vertical, overlapping at different widths so nothing looked too uniform. Once the entire board was covered I ripped a few pages on the diagonal and glued those over the top every once and while to create some more interesting patterns. Next I simply covered the frame with black duct tape to give it a nice bold, finished edge. Book Page CollageI tried a ton of different layouts on the floor before deciding on this vertical option with one diagonally in the middle (on top of the others). Inspiration Board DIYMy handman, Duncan, drilled the screws in to attach the boards together and then I attached them to the wall as he used a level to make sure everything lined up just right. Inspiration Board DIYI bought some thumbtacks that have magnets on the end of them which are perfect for special prints like the fashionable ladies that are on the board now (by Danny Brito). I think I'll make some pretty thumbtacks out of Vivi Dot buttons as well for things I don't mind putting holes in.

Do you have an inspiration board? If not, are there other ways you like to visually get inspired for what's to come in 2011?
If you prefer to compile your inspiration online via Pinterest make sure to follow my boards there!

Would You Like That Gift Wrapped?

My love of gift wrapping was inherited from my Mom. I knew how to create crisp corners and fancy handmade bows out of floral ribbon before I hit my double digit years. It was a running joke at my friend's birthday parties that the gift I brought could be spotted a mile away. My family is big into stocking stuffers too and we individually wrap every tiny thing that goes into them. The only sales we religiously hit on December 26th are the ones where we can stock up on fancy wrapping supplies at 50% off. Okay, I think you get it - we're into wrapping packages!

Unlike my Mom who has a boxes full of holiday wrap, bows, ribbon and gift tags I always end up scrounging for supplies. Now that Duncan and I don't plan on moving for a while I think I can finally warrant stocking up on some pretty, festive supplies. I think it will be fun to share with you my purchases as well as creative, eco friendly, and money saving alternatives here on the Dot Girl Blog as the days quickly countdown to Christmas.

I'll start off this 'Would You Like That Gift Wrapped' series with some of my all time favorite places to shop for gift wrap supplies as well as some fun new finds.

Target - I just spotted some incredibly cute holiday paper in the $0.99 section of Target. Unfortunately, it was when I was in Las Vegas so now I'm just hoping they have the same thing at the one I go to.

Daiso - Oh how I wish there were a Daiso in Seattle! Just about everything there is from Japan and costs $1.50. They have cute wrapping paper, but my $1.50's add up the fastest in the stationary section. Watch out for cute gift bags in varied sizes and adorable gift tags and cards. Lots of them have fun little sayings translated into English that almost make sense. That's the fun part!

Ikea - If you're willing to brave the crowds or are already there for other reasons Ikea usually has cute bags, tissue and wrapping paper at affordable Ikea prices.

Happy Tape - Japanese washi tape has changed me forever! More on that soon.

Paper Source - I could live inside a Paper Source store and be happy forever. So much cute stuff! Their paper products are really high quality, but you pay for it. I plan to share my tips on how to make the pricier stuff like this last so you get more for your money.

I love a good bargain so it's tough for me to spend a lot of money on paper products, especially when they're mass produced. I'd be happy to pay more for these handmade options though!

Ink + Wit - 'luxe gift wrap offset printed on durable 100% post consumer recycled paper' = SOLD! (found this shop via SFGirlByBay)

Alexander Girard - Handmade wrap so pretty it could be framed! (found this designer via Creature Comforts)

Viva Greetings - 'Letterpress Wrapping Paper with playful phrases in english, spanish and spanglish are perfecto!"

Paper Back Book Pages - A Matting Alternative

Just popping in for a quick DIY photo matting alternative. I recently framed a bunch of etsy purchases for our upstairs bathroom. I bought precut matting for most of them, but there was one that required a creative solution. I could have gotten a mat custom cut, but decided to try something new. I purchased a cheap paper back book at Goodwill. I made sure it had a warm hugh to the pages to compliment the photo. I also made sure it was in pretty bad shape overall so I wouldn't feel too guilty tearing it up. I simply ripped strips of the pages and layered them over each other with Elmer's Spray Adhesive (one of my favs). I placed this lovely photo from The Light Fantastic smack dab in the middle and she was ready for her frame!Photo Matting Alternative

Happy Halloween!

As promised, here are some pics that feature the whole look for our Fantastic Mr. Fox costumes. Hope you all had a fabulous Halloween!
Duncan put this together. It's exactly like Kristofferson's in the movie. I love it!

Fantastic Mr. Fox Costumes

Duncan and I adore The Fantastic Mr. Fox movie so we are very excited to dress up as Ash (me) and Kristofferson (Duncan) for Halloween. We did some shopping last weekend and found the perfect clothes for our get ups at Target and TJ Maxx so all that was left was to recreate the furry portions of the costumes. Here's how I created our tails and ears:
We bought a half a yard of faux fur each- foxy red for me and a gray blend for Duncan.
We also bought some small squares of white for the tip of the tail and the ears. Cut out a triangle and make sure the hair will be going in the right direction (down). Make sure to make tiny little snips so you only cut the backing and not the fur. If you just cut all the way through it will give the fur a funny, choppy hair cut.
Roll up the white triangle to create the tip of the tail.
Use a large, heavy duty needle to make a couple of quick stitches to keep the fur rolled up.
That's the only sewing that you'll need to do for this project. After that this fabric glue will be your best friend. It's amazing, and I almost used a whole bottle on two sets of these suckers.
Put some glue on the bottom corner of your fur (fur should be going downward here as well).
Place the white tip of the tail in the glue.
Tie up some stuffing so it's the right shape for the tail.
Cut the red fur on an angle with enough room to roll it up and overlap it. Place the tied up stuffing above the white fur tail tip.
Use the glue along the bottom and right edge and roll her up.
Add some extra stuffing at the top to fill it out and you're done! You can attach it directly to your clothes or to a belt.

We bought some cheap animal ear headbands to use as the base of our fox ears. I started with some bangs on top for mine.
Cut out some white fur in the shape of the ears (a little bit bigger if anything as you can cut them down). The fur should be going up for these cuts.
Then make a smaller ear shape in red for the inside of the ears. Do the same for the back of the ears. It helps to make these ones a bit bigger so they can overlap and cover up the sides of the store bought ears. The fabric glue works fast so you can just form it over the top of the headband and hold there a few seconds until it sets. Then just cut little strips to cover up the sides of the headbands and line the inside as well for more furry volume.
That's it! I drew some yellow stripes on some creme socks and made a little 'A' badge out of red fabric and felt. And we're done!

I'll be sure to post pictures of the whole look (bandit hats and all) after the weekend's festivities are complete. Happy Halloween!
