Christmas is Cancelled

Okay, it's not really cancelled just slightly postponed this year.

Seattle is under a blanket of snow with more predicted to be on the way tonight and tomorrow. At first glance this makes everything seem pretty and serene, but only until you try to go anywhere. Most flights were cancelled or extremely delayed yesterday, but things seem to be back on track this morning. That doesn't mean it's not a nightmare getting to the airport and through the security line though. Unfortunately for the Gaines family this means our first Christmas apart. Emily and Bryce are driving into San Francisco from Las Vegas today, but Mom had to make the tough decision to avoid the madness and remain snowed in up Seattle. Luckily there's no shortage of friends and family near by offering her Christmas plans to keep her busy. We'll miss ya Mom and it definitely won't be the same without you with us. Can't wait to see you soon, give you a great big belated Christmas hug and celebrate late this year.

And for your viewing pleasure I've included the good and the bad that come with along with a white Christmas. (photos courtesy of The Seattle PI)

Something Special Under the Tree

While I was out stocking stuffer shopping this weekend I just couldn't bring myself to spend ten dollars on a roll of wrapping paper. The cheap stuff is more trouble than it's worth since it's see through and rips so easily but the good stuff is just too darn pricey (especially knowing it will be half off the day after we need it). With all my paper and craft supplies at home I decided a crafty project was in order. All I bought was a package of 100 white hang tags for $3.50 from the office supply store and I was headed back home to get creative. It was the first creative project I had done in a while that wasn't Vivi Dot related so I had extra fun time with it. Here are my creations:Holly and polka dots

MMMM Mulled Wine

I made my first batch of mulled wine last year for a Vivi Dot friends and family holiday party/trunk show. It was a huge hit and after making it again at this year's party it's now officially a tradition. You really can't beat the way it makes the whole house smell like the holidays and the recipe I use is especially tasty.

I tend to wing it a bit since I make an extra big batch. For instance if I triple the recipe I don't need to triple the oranges. I also suggest letting it sit for at least the 15 minutes the recipe describes. The longer it sits the better it gets. Just be sure to keep an eye on it once the wine is added so it doesn't get too hot, boil, and take the 'fun' out of it. Also, there's obviously no need to spend much money on the wine since you're adding water, sugar, etc, but if you're like me and want to avoid the instant two buck chuck hangover I'd step it up one notch and go with something in the 3-4 dollar range from Trader Joe's.

Here's the full recipe courtesy of the Food Network

2 cups water
1/2 cup sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
1 fresh whole nutmeg
2 oranges, thinly sliced
1 bottle red wine

Combine 2 cups of water with the sugar and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Add the orange slices, remove pan from the heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Stir in the wine. Reheat gently over low heat, never allowing to boil. Serve hot, in heated glasses.Pin It

An Extra Large Holiday Delivery!

Vivi Dot had a busy weekend! I sold more than double what I normally do at Indiemart and had a great time doing it! There was even a line down the block to get in so it seems as though the word is out that it's the best place to drink and shop your weekend away.

Next up I spent a rainy Sunday inside making a over 20 items that needed to be shipped out today. I've been sending a couple of orders out each day but sending out ten packages at once marked a new record. Hopefully I'll soon look back at ten orders in a day as my 'humble beginnings,' but with this being my first official holiday season in the online world, I'm pretty excited about this record breaking day!

I mentioned before that Olive was patiently awaiting your orders so I figure it was only appropriate to have her pose next to today's big stack of boxes ready for shipment.

Up until now I've depended on City Car Share for all my transportation needs that couldn't be fulfilled by Muni. Though I highly recommend it, a car of my own has become more and more of a necessity as I do more shows, need to restock stores during my lunch hour, etc. After many months of putting it off Duncan and I bit the bullet and bought a car over Thanksgiving weekend. Our new four door hatchback Yaris seems to be the perfect little car for all of our adventures. It gets excellent gas mileage (29 city and 35 highway) and also has tons of room in the back when the back seats are folded down. There's even a nifty little contraption in the back that unfolds and covers up the gap between the 'trunk' and the folded own seats. Megan of MCG and I even fit both of our booth supplies and product in there on Saturday after Indiemart. Our little Yaris came into our lives just in time too as I can't imagine how I would have gotten through my daily trips to the post office without her!
Oh and Indy whole heartedly approves as well: Pin It

The Vivi Dot Family

Though I introduced the furry portion of the Vivi Dot family some time ago I think it's now time to put some faces to the names I often refer to on this blog. I'll also give you some insight into who does what.

This is my Grandma Dorthy (aka Dottie or Dot). She's literally the 'Dot' in Vivi Dot and is easily my biggest fan. Every time I talk to her she reminds me how much she loves the watch necklace I recently gave her and she's also been known to carry a book of Vivi Dot photos with her to show off to her friends. This is my boyfriend Duncan (aka Dunbar). He's also my roommate, the father of my dog Indy and kitty Olive and my full time partner in crime. He's a film editor by day (and sometimes night), makes awesome graphics for buttons (from Tim Gunn to psychedelic bananas), and can always be counted on to pick up the slack in the button pressing department when I'm going crazy getting ready for a show. I don't even have to ask him to join me at all of my shows around town. He's always there to help pack, drive, unpack, set up, drink beer and slang Vivi Dot stuff with the rest of us. Oh and he's also been known to work as my shipping manager when the timing works out. These are my good friends Allie and Summer (and me in the middle). We met while dancing in a hip hop dance group about 5 years ago. We're no longer with the group, but we find ourselves dancing pretty much anywhere it's allowed. As far as Vivi Dot goes they are my button pressing queens and booth attendant extraordinaires. They know the merch, the prints, and the business like it's their own and their dedication and support is incredible. I pay them in food, alcohol and Vivi Dot merchandise which makes it a great deal for me. This is me, Molly. I'm the owner and designer of Vivi Dot. I come up with new products, choose the prints, cut all of the fabric circles, glue all the findings onto the buttons, design the packaging, create and maintain the website, blog and online store and all of the other business stuff that goes along with Vivi Dot. That's it! Though there are other people that contribute from out of state whenever they can (my Mom Pam and sister Emily) that sums up the Vivi Dot family. Yay Vivi Dot team!Pin It

Duncan's Quicksilver Video

Check out the rad video Duncan just completed for Quicksilver. It's an interview with Kelly Slater who recently secured his 9th Association of Surfing Professionals world title during the Billabong Pro event. This is huge considering no other surfer in the 32-year history of the Assn. of Surfing Professionals has won more than four world titles.

Vivi Dot Online Pattern Catalog

It's likely not too hard to believe that I've become quite obsessed with fabric and paper. You could say I look at the world differently now... in terms of what things would look like on a one-inch button. This obsession means I'm constantly adding to my collection of fabrics and paper which makes it quite difficult to keep my pattern catalog up to date. Knowing that I'll realistically never be 'caught up,' I've decided to post what I have so far. You can check out all of my lovely patterns (fabrics, paper prints, as well as custom made images) here:

If you see a pattern you must have that's not currently in the Vivi Dot Online Store please don't hesitate to email me the pattern code that's listed below each circle swatch along with the product you'd like. There's no additional charge for ordering Vivi Dot items this way so get to shopping!

Shipping Address:
Shipping Preference: Select USPS or UPS (USPS is $3 for US and Canada & $4 International with no tracking and no guaranteed delivery times vs. UPS which price and delivery time varies based on location but allows you to track your shipment and is guaranteed)

The Adventures of a TIMF Vendor

After a marathon weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival I've finally found the time to announce to the blogosphere that it was a success! This show was by far the biggest event the Vivi Dot team has ever participated in and we're proud to say we not only survived, but we had a great time and sold a record number of dots along the way.

Here's how it all went down....
Duncan and I headed out to Treasure Island on Friday to set up and check out our booth space. By the time we arrived it was pretty chilly and windy so set up really only amounted to hanging some lanterns, figuring out our table layout and dropping off as much product and display supplies as we could. We walked around the grounds and were pleasantly surprised to see how small it was. It definitely is a 'boutique festival' and not nearly as daunting as Coachella, Outside Lands, etc. After our quick walk around we were off to Trader Joe's to grab snacks and beverages for the weekend ahead.

We woke up early on Saturday and headed off to pick up Summer and Allie who had coffee and bagels waiting for us. We arrived on Treasure Island around 10am and quickly started setting up the booth. We couldn't have asked for a better location as we were on the corner facing the main entrance/walkway. We were also neighbors with the mini Indie-mart so our friends from Deadbeat Sister, Pop Junkie, etc were right nearby. We were also kitty corner to San Franpsycho who we later realized was run by a guy (Andy) who Duncan grew up skating with. The only drawback to our open corner spot was that we were at the mercy of strong gusts of wind. Thank goodness for cat ties and fishing line! We rigged up some Macgyver type s*#t that saved us from having to have someone guard the outside of the booth and watch for fly-away product.

The concert goers started streaming in at 11:30 and the traffic flow to our booth didn't really slow down at all until after dinner. Duncan and I were able to sneak away to catch a little bit of Hot Chip and Justice and listened to everything else from our booth, which thanks to the alternating stages was easy to do.

Day two went pretty much the same way as the first, but it was a tad busier, warmer and less windy early on. I was excited to see that there were buyers for each of my varied products though rings, small hair clips and watch necklaces seemed to be the biggest sellers. All of the shoppers were upbeat and really excited about what the Vivi Dot booth had to offer. It was awesome to get the Vivi Dot name and products out there to an entirely new set of consumers.

Allie and Summer headed home on the shuttle after dinner. This allowed them to get home at a more reasonable hour and freed up the entire car to get everything home. We started packing up at the designated 9:30, mid way through the Raconteurs set. We made the tough decision to hoof it to the car with everything instead of waiting at least another hour and half before we'd be able to drive onto the grounds. This was a really rough way to end three very long days, but when my head hit the pillow at 11:45 instead of after 1:00am it was definitely worth it. Oh and frozen treat from the ice cream man on the way back from our first of three trips to car didn't hurt either.

Glorious Laborious

I've been sweatshopping myself like crazy in preparation for the Treasure Island Music Festival. I've hand cut thousands and thousands (no exaggeration) of fabric circles, had a bunch of help pressing them all, and have sorted each 'dot' according to which Vivi Dot product they'll become. It was truly a LABOR day weekend!

Lucky for me I was able to get some sun while I pumped out tons of dots. Check out my warm weekend set up below as well as our spread of summery refreshments.

Up next- My first trip to Montana for my sister's wedding this week! I'll be sure to post the many ways the lovely bride incorporated Vivi Dot into her wedding.

Now I'm off to work on my wedding toast!Pin It

Some friends from the other city in California recently had an art show. Duncan and I couldn't make it down to LA because it was the same weekend as Indie-Mart, but we sent our support via buttons instead.
Jesi created some awesome artwork for promo buttons that they passed out at the show. Duncan gets full credit for production on those though. He manufactured all of them while I got ready for Indie-mart. Jessi's working on some more images for me so watch out for her special addition Vivi Dot buttons soon!

Check out some of the awesome pieces below and look out for the Vivi Dot thumb tacks they used to mark everything.

Treasure Island Music Festival!

I am very very excited to announce that Vivi Dot was chosen to be a vendor at the Treasure Island Music Festival! There are only about 35 spots for non profits, poster sellers, other non food/drink vendors so I thought making it was quite a long shot. Nonetheless I got word last week that I'm in!

I've got a ton of work ahead of me to prepare for the 12,000 person crowds two days in a row. Any wagers on how many circles I'll cut between now and then?
I'm looking forward to finding out who else will be selling there. Kelly (Indiemart) is putting together a mini Indie-Mart within a couple of booths, but that's all I know so far.

Buy your tickets soon because the line-up is amazing!Pin It
